For anyone as yet unaware, Formula One is returning to Las Vegas after a four-decade hiatus, with the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix. The Las Vegas Grand Prix will mark the 1,100th round of the 2023 Formula One World Championship, and—following the Miami Grand Prix (Miami, FL on May 07) and the United States Grand Prix (Austin, TX on October 22)—the first time in more than 40 years that three races in a single Formula One season will be held in the United States.
Reading the palpable buzz around the situation, Netflix has decided to kick off the week of the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix with The Netflix Cup (the streamer’s first-ever live sporting event!), by pairing up stars from two of its popular sports series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing (now, in production on their sixth and second seasons, respectively) in a match play golf tournament at the gorgeous Tom Fazio-designed Wynn Golf Club, with commentary provided by sportscaster Kay Adams, PGA TOUR player Joel Dahmen, comedian Bert Kreischer, and iconic NFL running back Marshawn Lynch.
The matchups—pairing a Formula 1 driver with a PGA professional—will feature Lando Norris (McLaren Racing) and Rickie Fowler (PGA TOUR) vs. Carlos Sainz (Scuderia Ferrari) and Justin Thomas (PGA TOUR), and Alex Albon (Williams Racing) and Max Homa (PGA TOUR) vs. Pierre Gasly (BWT Alpine F1 Team) and Collin Morikawa (PGA TOUR). The two foursomes will play eight holes of match play, with each foursome’s top team facing off in a playoff hole to crown the winning duo.
Originally opened in 1952 as the Desert Inn Golf Club, the Wynn Golf Club—redesigned by acclaimed golf course architect, Tom Fazio, who is credited with having designed 46 of Golf Digest’s 200 greatest courses in the United States—is a 70-par, 18-hole course covering 128 acres, and is the only golf course on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Closed from 2017 for two years, Fazio and his son Logan Fazio undertook a redesign of the course, that reopened in 2019 with 10 revamped holes and eight new ones. And despite being located in the middle of the desert, the Wynn Golf Club features over 8,000 trees (including 1,200 that remain from the Desert Inn days) and features water on 12 of the 18 holes.
