Piff the Magic Dragon (aka British magician John van der Put)—whose hilarious, madcap, interactive, and yes, mind-blowing residency at Flamingo Las Vegas on the Strip has been extended through 2027—has gone all in on Las Vegas, and he couldn’t be happier.   And it's no wonder, seeing as it’s one of the best comedy magic shows in Las Vegas, proving year after year why he’s deservedly become a staple of Las Vegas entertainment.

Along with his stunning, vivacious, and delightfully daffy showgirl sidekick, Jade Simone (aka Mrs. Magic Dragon), who simultaneously serves as Piff’s comedic foil and wrangler of the real star of the show, Mr. Piffles II, the world’s second magic-performing chihuahua (cloned from the DNA of the original Mr. Piffles, who sadly left this mortal coil in 2024), Piff is living his best Magic Dragon life.

This past week, I went to see Piff’s show after not having seen it in a few years. If you’re looking for things to do in Las Vegas, this should be high on your list. Not only was it as enjoyable as I recalled—many LOLs, some downright guffaws, and about a half-dozen moments of being utterly gobsmacked—but I was taken with how interactive it was, and how fresh that keeps things.

This, of course, is the telltale sign of what I’ve dubbed “go-back-ability”: that quality in which a Las Vegas show doesn’t get stale, thereby making it the perfect thing to do for Las Vegas locals to attend when they have friends in town looking for a good night out. I originally coined the term after the fifth time I saw The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, and now I’m calling Madge, because Piff the Magic Dragon is soaking in it!

So, when I learned that Piff had declared it “Hot Dragon Summer,” I had to know what that entailed. Fortunately, I was granted an audience with the Strip’s favorite bedazzled reptile—who’s far more hospitable than one might expect a headlining magical dragon to be—at which I asked him what exactly HDS was all about.

“Hot Dragon Summer. It’s the new vibe for the season. I’m a dragon. I’m pretty hot. It’s summer. Summer’s hot. We live in the desert. Dry heat. Perfect for reptiles. Everything is coming together to make one hot dragon summer!”
