One Night for ONE DROP 2017 was a departure, of sorts, in that writer/directors, Laetitia and Nicky Dewhurst imbued humor into a show not known for eliciting smiles.  To wit, lack of sustainable drinking water is a decidedly unfunny subject; but the Dewhursts (performers in Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity) managed it with aplomb and flair (not to mention a snazzy cameo by William Shatner).

You see, the thing (one thing, anyhow) that differentiates One Night for ONE DROP from anything else, is that it’s a program that’s only ever produced once – thus the clever name.  The performers volunteer their time and energies, and rehearse for months, on a production that will be mounted on this special night, and then, never again.

So, this year – for One Night for ONE DROP 2018 – armed with the life story of Grammy-nominated performer, Jewel; the Dewhursts returned to their dual-roles as writers and directors.  Says Nicky Dewhurst, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be doing One Night for ONE DROP, again this year.  To have the support and story of Jewel has been amazing, and we can’t wait to share her beautiful story with an audience.”

And, as a way of thanking the city upon which Cirque has built its brand; in addition to benefiting ONE DROP’s global water efforts, proceeds from the event will benefit educational efforts in the Las Vegas community (we’re looking at you, Springs Preserve!).

Presented by MGM Resorts International, One Night for ONE DROP 2018 has derived its inspiration from pivotal moments throughout the life of Jewel.  The production leads the audience on a journey, through significant events in Jewel’s life; making them relatable, by building them around such prevalent themes as love, family, betrayal, and the courage to forgive – all while featuring breathtaking feats by Cirque du Soleil performers, and lightening the mood with a variety of comedic elements.

“I’m so excited to be collaborating with Nicky and Laetitia, and the talented cast and crew of Cirque du Soleil, to tell my story,” says Jewel.  “I’m really looking forward to this, and doing it for such an amazing cause, that is very near and dear to my heart.”

A longtime friend of the Las Vegas community, two of her previous collaborations that I particularly enjoyed were the opening of the Golden Nugget (where she shared the stage with Tony Bennett, and joked about the guy in the front row, flicking his Bic – aka me!), and the opening of the Harry Winston boutique inside Phase III of the Forum Shops at Caesars (cheers to the great Carol Brodie for wittily pairing Jewel with jewels).

So please join me in welcoming Jewel back to Las Vegas, and into the world of Cirque du Soleil, when One Night for ONE DROP 2018 takes over the Michael Jackson ONE Theatre at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, here in Las Vegas, on Friday, March 2nd.  But hurry, because saying that tickets to this one-off event are limited is a study in understatement.
