Are they a jam band? Kinda… Are they a party band? Absolutely. Are they a rock band? You bet your sweet ass they are! Regardless of how one chooses to categorize them, the one constant about Camp Freddy is the low likelihood of ever seeing the same line-up sing the same thing twice.
The magic begins with the core band, made-up of key members Billy Morrison (The Cult) on guitar, Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction) on bass, Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers) on guitar, Donovan Leitch (Nancy Boy) on vocals, and Matt Sorum (Guns n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Darling Stilettos) on drums. From here the thrill continues with a revolving door of A-list guests, joining the band, onstage, for what basically amounts to an all-star jam. What kind of guests? Well, a brief list includes Slash, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Billy Gibbons, Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
And the set-lists are awesome! One night you might get Macy Grey and Moby singing The Ramones, another might find Lou Reed and Linda Perry belting-out Led Zeppelin, and another still could pair Fred Schneider and George Clinton channeling The Clash. It’s like a rock n roll frappé where you have no idea what half the ingredients are, but it sure tastes great!
The group completely rocks it whenever taking-on songs by the myriad bands its members have belonged to over the years (i.e. “Paradise City” by Guns n’ Roses or “She Sells Sanctuary” by The Cult). Add in guest appearances by members of those bands (GnR’s Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagen or The Cult’s Billy Duffy), and it’s just about hanging-on for dear life.
Excellent at covering bands like Aerosmith (“Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion”), the Rolling Stones (“Sympathy for the Devil” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”) and Led Zeppelin (“Rock and Roll” “Whole Lotta Love” and too many more to name); I personally find that Camp Freddy is at its peak when taking on the glam-rock era, covering artists such as Mott the Hoople and David Bowie with songs including “All the Young Dudes” as well as “Suffragette City” and “Ziggy Stardust.”
And what’s on my Camp Freddy wish list? Well, since you asked, for the core band-members: “Get It On/Bang a Gong” by T.Rex. And as for special guests: Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart joining the band to rock-out on The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” (which I’ve heard Ann do brilliantly). But hey – that’s just me. In the meantime, I’ll take what I can get, and so should you.
Anyhow, this Saturday (July 10th), Camp Freddy returns to Palms Casino Resort where they will be headlining the Debauchery in the Desert party at Pearl Concert Theater. Joining the band are special guests Billy Duffy (The Cult), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) and Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, as well as Las Vegas' own Franky Perez. What’s more, word on the street is that Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe) will be joining the band, as well. (And if that ain’t enough, there’s an extra special guest who is toying with the idea, but mum’s the word, for now…). Opening for Camp Freddy will be the world premier of Teased, an original burlesque show from the creators of X Burlesque. So, find a sitter for the kids, and get ready to rock-out with your collective c*ck out, Vegas; ‘cause Camp Freddy’s back in town!
