A Filming, a Benefit, a House-Party, and Boom-Boom (aka Just Another Day in New York) |

After the luncheon at the David Yurman Townhouse, Amy Sacco, Lorraine Goddard and I swung-by the Food Network studios at Chelsea Market, to visit Chef Anne Burrell on the set of her series, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef. Anne is a hoot, and is so incredibly good at what she does, that when he appears on Iron Chef America, Chef Mario Batali asks Anne to be his sous chef, so that she can prepare the dough for his pastas.
Later that night, I accompanied Amy to the Solving Kids’ Cancer benefit at the American Museum of Natural History. The first benefit by the three year old organization co-founded by Scott Kennedy and John London (both of whom suffered the loss of a child to neuroblastoma), was stocked with A-listers such as Jill Stuart, Nanette Lepore, Carolina Herrera (with whom I discussed her new boutique at Crystals at CityCenter as well as her trip some years back to Lake Las Vegas for a benefit for the Las Vegas Philharmonic), Bonnie Young, Lady Liliana Cavendish, Marcia Gay Harden, Donna Karan, and Nigel Barker. Alexander Dexter Jones was manning the wheels of steel, while Amy and comedian Seth Herzog served as co-auctioneers and rallied the attendees to donate more than $400,000 for a new pharmacological trial for an oncology virus (that would attack pediatric cancer cells). After the auction, Shawn Colvin got up and sang for the crowd. Here’s hoping for a good trial!
Après the benefit, Amy had a surprise for me, and told me that we’d be stopping by a dinner party at the home of Allison Sarofim. Allison is one of those people in my life, who I get to see very sporadically, but with whom I’m always able to pick right-up where we left off. She’s innately creative, and has been blessed by the muse in many disciplines – the dance, visual arts, and cooking (to name but a few). And when I say cooking, I mean the lady can cook! The tenderest of tenderloins, scrambled eggs with truffle oil, roasted fingerling potatoes, and a caprese salad that was just divine.
Allison and producer Stuart Parr are the most convivial of hosts, and when Amy and I arrived, they quickly set places for us at a table filled with a some of my favorite New York peeps, including Greg Calejo, and Joyce Varvatos with her husband John, not to mention two of my new faves, Elle Décor editor Carlos Mota, author of the new book Flowers Chic & Cheap, and jeweler Carlos Souza. Seated next to John as I was, I was delighted to show him the dinner suit I’d had made from black stretch denim, while in Hong Kong. I mean, black stretch denim really is so John Varvatos Bowery, you know? Besides, those trousers are the closest I’ll ever get to a “skinny jean” so I’m rather proud of them.
But the night wasn’t over, yet! From Allison and Stuart’s, Amy, Greg and I headed down to the Meat Packing District to the new Standard Hotel, and up to the chic-er than thou Boom Boom Room (which I find amusing, as Amy had been talking about opening a venue of the same name for years). I was so happy to see my longtime friend Kamil Parchomienko was in town helping Andre Balazs with his nightlife endeavors. There too was the previously mentioned Alexander Dexter Jones, spinning to our delight. I went up to the roof and was thrilled by the amazing views. Truly incredible. Shortly after 1am, I bid my adieus, and apparently missed some drama that took place with a Hollywood A-lister, a one-of-a-kind beaded cashmere Richard Tyler opera coat, and 1OAK. But somethings are better left to the imagination. As for the next day – well, I’ll tell you, tomorrow! |
