It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of all things Maccioni. That includes Sirio, Egi, and their trio of sons (especially the eldest, Mario – as he lives in Las Vegas and I’ve spent far more time with him than his brothers). So, when ARIA opened and I came to realize that the Maccioni clan had opened a new restaurant concept – this time focused on the traditional Tuscan fare of Sirio’s youth and an extensive collection of Italian wines – I was delighted.

But, as these things happen, it was to be just over three years before I’d make it in to Sirio Ristorante. I waited until my friend Benedetta was in town, from Rome; because I valued her opinion, both as an aficionado of design (the Maccionis’ restaurants are always well-lit and feature spectacular design aesthetics), and as a “real” Italian. I’m delighted to report that neither of us was disappointed, in the least.

The first thing I noticed was the flattering lighting story – making this a great place to take a date (if not Mister Right, then at least Mister Right-Now). Our server was prompt, knowledgeable, and friendly; but left us alone to enjoy our conversation.

But it was Chef Vincenzo Scarmiglia’s contemporary takes on those Tuscan classics that really blew our collective skirts up. There was a fabulously hearty Pappardelle with Veal Ragù. The Organic Chicken Breast was pan-fried and succulent. But my favorite, hands-down, was the Octopus Risotto; but let’s face it – if you can’t get a fabulous risotto from a Maccioni restaurant, where can you?

So, if you’ve got a hankering for the tastes and smells of Tuscany, and enjoy a full-bodied Barolo – sidling over to Sirio Ristorante could be just what Dr. Shulman ordered.
