Having dissected a trio of trends in Part 1, here’s the other three trends I noticed, on the red carpet at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

JEWEL TONES: Intense hues of ruby, sapphire, and emerald stood out amongst the blushes and nudes, making these ladies positively pop with radiance.  Bryce Dallas Howard in an off-the-rack sequined dress from Dress the Population glammed things up with two-strands of multi-colored goodness from Irene Neuwirth; while Judith Light and Ellie Kemper kept things cool in velvet cobalt numbers from Tom Ford and Wai Ming, respectively.  And going glam in green, was Nicole Kidman in a rainforest-inspired Gucci gown that hardly anybody else could’ve pulled off nearly as well.

THE GUN SHOW: High-necked dresses (that allow one to forgo a necklace) showing-off both a tiny waist and toned arms, was all the rage.  Yara Shahidi was bright and festive, in a smart dress from Naeem Khan that alternated between panels of colorful sequins and sheer fabric; with jewels from Jane Taylor and SwarovskiRashida Jones went romantic à la Vivienne Westwood Couture; while Michelle Dockery looked anything but post-Edwardian, in a boldly-striped gown from Ellie Saab, with a high slit, that she wore with jewels from Nikawa and Amanda Pearl, and a fabulous bouffant that showed-off her face wonderfully.

METALLIC DETAILING: Even though it’s winter, nothing was getting these ladies to hide their shoulders!  Sofia Vergara took a departure from those mermaid gowns she so adores, and opted for comfort with class thanks to a beaded Zuhair Murad that she wore with some dynamite jewels from Lorraine SchwartzNathalie Emmanuel went strapless in a bejeweled J. Mendel dress, jewels from H. Stern jewels (nose-ring, not included), and a killer pair of strappy gold Alexander White sandals.  Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a vision of island elegance, in a Lela Rose column covered in golden leaves, and a ‘60s era gold-and-diamond necklace from Fred Leighton.  And Gina Rodriguez showed off her shoulders and other assets in a blush-hued PatBo gown by Patricia Bonaldi, an L. Frank ring, and dangling earrings by Heub.

As for my favorite jewelry moments of the night…  First was Viola Davis in Nirav Modi’s “Grand Celestial” necklace.  I love how Tracee Ellis Ross has made rings her thing; and this time she’s traded the white gold and diamonds for sublime bursts of color in the form of Lydia Courteille's "Filles su Ciel" ring (in jade with tsavorite garnet) and "Secret Garden" ring (with pink sapphires, opals, rubies, and diamonds) on one hand, and a pearl ring by Yvel (who presents amazing pearls in new and exciting ways), and a diamond slice "Flower" ring from Hong Kong's L'Dezen by Payal Shaw, on the other.  Talk about having the whole world on your hands!  And oh, Chrissy Teigen!  The way Miss Chrissy paired that sexy tuxedo-dress with Nikos Koulis’ emerald, diamond and onyx jewelry parallels the manner in which Koulis breathes a fresh modernity into his decidedly Deco-inspired designs.  A lengthy lariat that extends to the waist?  Yes, please!  A dangling earring that can be converted into a brooch?  Sign me up!  It’s the stuff of which jewelry dreams are made.
