Finally, in co-Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has found a pair of contemporary award show hosts who are neither in AARP nor trying too hard to be hip (not to mention being smart enough not to bite the hands that sign their checks).

And not only was the pair undisputedly “on” – displaying the razor-sharp timing and rapier-witted repartee that has endeared them to millions over the past fifteen years – but they were indubitably two of the best-dressed, as well; both on and off the red carpet and stage.

On the carpet, Fey wore a custom cocktail dress by L’Wren Scott with Fred Leighton jewelry; while Poehler wore a Stella McCartney evening suit (sans blouse) and Chopard diamonds.  But my absolute favorite Poehler/Fey moments happened when they inhabited the skins of alter-egos Darcy St. Fudge “a psychic who solves her own murder” (Poehler) and Damien Francisco “a professional volleyball player, battling Restless Leg Syndrome” (Fey) – both “nominated” for the phony film Dog President.

Adele, further demonstrating the realness that is among the myriad reasons the world fell in love with her in the first place, accepted her award for Best Original Song for “Skyfall” in a dress made especially for her to wear on this occasion, by Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey.  Okay, maybe that’s not particularly relatable to most folks; but when she opened her mouth and started laughing about how she and her friend were “just pissing ourselves laughing” well, you couldn’t help but laugh with her.

Jodie Foster (sticking to her trademark Armani) was funny and captivating in her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and turned what could have been a very preachy and uncomfortable speech into one that was heartfelt and moving and human, and kept viewers riveted.  Frankly, anyone unmoved must’ve been made of stone.  And while I’m tempted to criticize her choice in Mel Gibson as a tablemate, far be it from me to cast any aspersions as far as the company a person keeps (glass houses, and all…).  Instead, what I’ll take with me are her words of love to her dementia-stricken mother.

I loved that the HFPA had the wherewithal to tip its orchestral hat to one of the seminal scenes from Season 1 of HBO’s Girls, when the powers-that-be chose a remix of “Dancing on My Own” by Swedish songbird, Robyn, as the music to which Lena Dunham walked to the stage, to accept the award for Best Actress - TV Series - Musical or Comedy.

And after that award (during the reading of which, Fey was seen white-knuckling with JLo, while Poehler was seen canoodling with George Clooney), upon returning to the stage, with cocktail in hand, Fey congratulated Dunham, assuring her how thrilled they were to have gotten her through middle school.

The final comedic arrow in their hysterical quiver: “We’re going home, with Jodie Foster!”
