Since the beginning of the shutdown, one of the things I’ve most enjoyed shining a light upon has been the incredible philanthropic efforts and community support from some of the gaming companies based on the Las Vegas Strip.*  As I mentioned in a previous article, one such company, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas—an independent, single-property casino-operator—had consolidated contributions from all of its kitchens and restaurant partners, and donated the resulting ten pallets of food (comprised mostly of fresh dairy and produce) to Three Square.

Like many Las Vegas resorts, however, this would prove to be just the beginning.  Continuing its efforts to support those in need and at risk, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas recently made another round of donations—to Three Square, once again; as well as to The Just One Project and Catholic Charites of Southern Nevada—with a total value of more than a quarter of a million dollars.

This past week, team members raided the minibars in the resort’s 3,000+ guest rooms, gathering both prepackaged snacks (think: chips, cookies, granola bars, and Planters Nuts), as well as individual cartons and cans of beverages such as O.N.E Pure Coconut Water, Gatorade, tea, and assorted Pepsi products (including Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Sierra Mist).  This, in addition to the deliveries that began last month of fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, sliced cheeses, eggs, milk, and yogurt retrieved from its warehouse and various restaurants.

All told, this means that in the six weeks since the shutdown, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has donated 92 pallets and 104,000 pounds of food items and beverages.  This in no way is meant to imply that the company views this as a fait accompli.  Rather, think of it as more of an opening salvo, as they plan to continue making donations to our community’s nonprofit organizations until the closures and restrictions are lifted.

[Editor’s Note: Based on recent events, it's worth noting that the Las Vegas Strip, McCarran International Airport, the Las Vegas Convention Center, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and nearly a million residents (including yours truly)—by merit of being located in unincorporated Clark County, and not in the City of Las Vegas—receive municipal governance not from the Mayor of Las Vegas, but from the Clark County Commission.]
