People are constantly telling me to get in shape.  I usually reply with some retort along the lines that I have a shape, and it resembles an Anjou Pear.  The latest group dead set on making me feel the burn is my trio of darling pals – Shannon McBeath, Milo Miloscia, and Mark Cornelson – who’ve banded together and opened THE RIDE – Premium Indoor Cycling, on South Grand Canyon and West Flamingo Road, just off of the 215; and I’ve gotta give them credit (because that’s what I do, when it’s due) – they’ve done a marvelous job.

The facility is quite lovely and inviting; and the smiling staff so cheerful as to be somewhat unsettling to an old curmudgeon, like yours-truly.  But I’ll admit that, once I started peeking around, and allowed myself to be receptive of the universally upbeat attitude, it became kinda contagious.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the décor is the neon art installation over the locker-bay that reads “life’s too short for an ordinary ride.”  The logic is unassailable.   THE RIDE has also implemented the work-out version of Fandango, wherein you can not only schedule your rides in advance, but also book your bike, so you can be in whichever part of THE RIDE Theater you desire.  There’s even an app, for that!

And speaking of THE RIDE Theater, it’s been thoughtfully conceived and realized – with a high-tech sound-and-lighting story (including expertly-designed acoustics) that allows for a multimedia cocoon to envelop each rider, in uniquely created multisensory environments; ensuring that riders will be immersed in their experience, while not fretting about being unplugged from the goings-on in the outside world.

They also partook of some sneaky psychological shenanigans (which I wholeheartedly endorse, btw…), in that one of the sponsors of their lovely Grand Opening party was Christina Tosi’s as-yet-unopened Milk Bar at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas (read all about Milk Bar, soon!), so everyone who attended and went home with a goodie-bag, opened it to find one of Milk Bar’s famed Crack Pies® - which, in addition to being downright addictive, is a great way to ensure that guests would have a need to return, and burn-off those calories.

Will I partake of a session at THE RIDE?  Anything’s possible.  But, for the record, I did a spin session last summer, and I can honestly say that at no time in my life has my taint ever been so sore.  But seeing as these folks know where I live (literally; and what’s worse, it’s right down the street!), and have expressed interest in having me program some music (which is always a clever way to come at me), it’ll probably happen.  Stay tuned…
