Last fall, during Fashion’s Night Out, I was delighted when my longtime comrades, Shannon Dupont and Cory McCormack, came over to the DJ Booth, and told me about their new project – SHē by Morton’s, that would be assuming the spaces previously occupied by Beso Restaurant and Eve Nightclub

Now, I’m always thrilled when a friend (or friends) succeeds.  But the dining/nightlife game in this town has become so competitive as to be borderline hostile to newcomers (even newcomers who’ve been on the scene for more than a decade).

So, after the NYE excitement had died-down a bit, I grabbed my pals, Audra and Phil, and we went to check-out the scene at SHē; and I’m downright elated to be able to report that it surpassed all of our expectations.

I think that part of it boiled down to the fact that in this era of celebrity chefs and reality cooking competitions and food blogs that so many of the dining venues in Las Vegas have begun to take themselves way too seriously.  I’m not saying that the quality of the food should suffer – ever; but a dinner spent with friends should be fun.

This concept has not been wasted on the powers-that-be, at SHē.  And lest you misunderstand, the food is irrefutably delicious.  If viewed by an outsider at another table, our booth must’ve seemed like a barrage of sparks flying from the silverware, and a bottomless supply of martinis (served in very decadent glasses).  Everything was good – but there wasn’t a somber patron in the joint (or sober, for that matter).

Women in costumes paraded down the catwalk, while a sassy DJ played the hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s (including songs by Duran Duran, A Taste of Honey, The Cult, Pretenders, and The Cure).  Stilt-walkers roamed the restaurant, holding long feathers that they used to tickle the chins of some of the guests.

Meanwhile, the décor (save for a pair of exquisite chandeliers) has undergone a complete makeover, emerging as an Art Deco supper club in the midst of a post-modern dream (kind of like what you’d get if the Rainbow Room had been portrayed in Blade Runner).

My favorite courses were the Mini Bakers (deconstructed fully-loaded baked fingerling potatoes), the Sea Bass Bites (with Ponzu glaze, cilantro yogurt, and avocado), and the Cupcake Martini (vodka + frosting + sprinkles = fun).  The staff was (without exception) friendly and helpful, while never succumbing to sycophantism.  But the most important thing about dining at SHē, is that the management and kitchen have succeeded in serving incontrovertibly delicious food in a beautifully decorated space, without sucking any of the fun out of the experience.  And that’s a meal of which I’ll gladly partake, time and again.
