Last week, at The Shops at Crystals, at the opening of Las Vegas’ first Dsquared2 boutique; I was able to get a few moments with Ricky Martin, who was hosting the affair, with the Catenacci twins – better known as Dean and Dan Caten.  In a vacuum, this might seem like a huge get for the brothers Caten, but seeing as they produced the wardrobe for Martin’s new Las Vegas residency, Ricky Martin: All In, that had opened the night before, at the Park Theater; it was pretty symbiotic.

After a bit of chitchat about meeting a few years back (when Keep Memory Alive honored Gloria & Emilio Estefan at the annual Power of Love gala), he asked how I liked the new show; to which I replied that I’d probably burned five pounds, just watching his choreographed cavorting, around the stage.

“Ha!  That’s terrific!” he proclaimed, before continuing.  “Actually, I was kinda worried about losing weight after the first round of fittings (because this is like doing a few hours of intense cardio every night), but you know Dean and Dan – with their clothes; the skinnier, the better!”

It should be noted that Dsquared2 didn’t just design specific looks for Martin (as they've done for Madonna, Britney Spears, Tokio Hotel, and Fergie), but wardrobed the entirety of the show, as well as the slick video that kicks it all off.  This meant everything for Martin, as well as for his legion of dancers, who had multiple costume changes, as well.

And the show, itself?  A high-energy, glossy production from Martin’s entrance – descending from the ceiling on Plexiglas platform – to his final waves goodbye, in the midst of a maelstrom of metallic confetti.  But what else would you expect from the artist who (while giving due credit to the Estefans, Selena, Santana, Celia Cruz, and Jose Feliciano, for clearing the path he followed), paved the way for the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Emilio Iglesias, and Mark Antony.

On that note, know that – as an international superstar, with millions of records sold in Spanish, French, and Portuguese, prior to releasing his English-language crossover hit, “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” in 2009 – not every song is gonna be in English.  So, for those few numbers, should you not hablo the Español; I suggest sitting back; enjoying the music, the choreography, the sets, and those Dsquared2 costumes; and letting the palpable energy from the stage, flow over you.
