As she’s done for the past half-dozen years, local songbird Christy Molasky has taken mic in hand and put on one heckuva concert, at Rock the Walk – an annual family concert to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes; and Rock the Walk 2012 did not disappoint.

Backed by the ever-revolving group of friends and family (including husband Alan, daughter Josie, and college-bound son, Jess), who perform with music director/pianist Dave King, as the Music Junkies, Molasky regaled the audience with songs ranging from “Rumor Has It” by Adele and “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac to “Raise Your Glass” by P!nk and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” by Guns n’ Roses.  She sang a duet of the Civil Wars’ “Barton Hollow” with Jess, who covered some John Mayer and sang some Paramore with sister Josie, who made like a “Battle Born” Alicia Keyes when accompanying herself on keyboards while singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” in a little love letter to The King.

I’ll be honest.  If you randomly told me that you wanted me to come to watch a mother, father and their two teenaged kids at some sing-along, I’d think you’d been taking mushrooms.  But there’s something about rock and roll that prevents the evening from veering into schmaltz-ville.  It’s fun seeing your friends rocking out on stage.  It’s a hoot seeing them twirl like Tina Turner in a fringed dress, singing “Proud Mary” – and it works.  I tell ya, that is one talented family.

Of course, with the Springs Preserve as your amphitheater, it’s like performing at your own version of Red Rocks (but with better seating, and yummy food provided by Fifth Avenue Restaurant Group).

Besides – there aren’t a lot of places where you can hold an outdoor concert on an evening in mid-September, and still be in shorts and sandals.

But this is Las Vegas, folks; and that’s just how we roll!
